  • Being a child psychologist is a multifaceted, rewarding and highly impactful career path. Childhood is a period of rapid emotional, social, and cognitive growth and child psychologists play a crucial role in helping children and families navigate challenges during these critical developmental stages to support their development, mental health, and well-being. The role is diverse and requires adaptability in working with each child, young person and family’s unique needs and strengths. Being a child psychologist requires skills to connect with children and young people of various ages, by engaging with them in creative and interactive ways. It also involves building skills in working with multiple stakeholders including parents, teachers, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, GP’s and Paediatricians just to name a few!

Becoming a child psychologist requires extensive education and training, typically involving at least six years of study, supervised practice, and continued learning. The role is intellectually engaging and requires staying updated on the latest research in therapeutic techniques and developments in this rapidly evolving field.

While a career in child psychology can be challenging it is a great choice for those with a natural passion for helping children and families overcome challenges and reach their potential.
