Nationwide changes to Autism Assessment - What you need to know

The Federal Government has introduced nationwide changes to the way Autism is assessed. Here is a quick summary of information with what you need to know:

Assessment for Autism diagnosis is now a 3 step process:

1.    Assessment of Functioning

2.    Medical Examination

3.    Single Clinician Assessment

Possibility of a "team consensus" evaluation if there is not high confidence from the single clinician assessment

Who can do an Autism assessment?

1.    Assessment of functioning

Any medical or allied health professional can complete this component

2.    Medical Examination

Medical practitioner who holds general or specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia

3.    Single Clinician Diagnostic Evaluation

Psychologists who hold general registration AND practice endorsement in Clinical Psychology, Educational/Developmental Psychology or Clinical Neuropsychology OR Medical practitioners who holds specialist registration in child health, general paediatrics, psychiatry or neurology OR at least 6 years’ experience in the assessment of neurodevelopmental and behavioural disorders
